Overview AHFC offers an Education Scholarship to help family members pursue career advancement. Recipients may receive federally funded assistance of up to $2,500 to support a range of educational pursuits — from short-term technical or trade training to college coursework. Who is eligible - Applicants must currently receive AHFC public housing rental assistance either through an AHFC housing voucher program or as a resident of a unit owned by AHFC. - Adult applicants are eligible if they plan to enroll in a vocational, trade, or academic program. - High school seniors are eligible if they intend to begin a vocational, trade, or academic program in the semester immediately following their high school graduation. Approved schools and permitted uses - The school or training provider must be located within the State of Alaska. - Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, required textbooks, and fees that are directly related to the student’s education. - Eligible uses include short-term topic-specific training (for example, culinary classes, welding coursework, or computer instruction), professional development opportunities (such as travel career academies), and longer-term college programs (one-, two-, or four-year degrees). - The institution or program must be recognized by one of the following: - Alaska Post-Secondary Education Commission Eligible Schools & Programs - Alaska Department of Health - Alaska Department of Family and Community Services - Alaska Department of Labor Eligible Training Providers List (ETPL) How applications are evaluated The selection committee evaluates applicants using four primary factors: 1. Whether all application requirements were submitted on time; 2. The overall completeness of the application packet; 3. Two letters of recommendation from sources such as teachers, employers, property managers, case workers, or friends that explain their support for the applicant; 4. A personal essay from the applicant outlining educational, vocational, or financial goals and describing participation in community activities or other efforts toward self-sufficiency.
