Alaska Performance Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by State of Alaska
Overview
The Alaska Performance Scholarship (APS) gives eligible Alaska high school graduates financial assistance to help pay for postsecondary education within the state.
Who is eligible
- Alaska residents who graduated from an Alaska high school (public, private, or homeschooled) in 2011 or later and who meet the program requirements.
- Completion of a rigorous high school curriculum.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
- Achievement of the required score on a recognized college- or career-readiness entrance exam.
Where it can be used
APS funds may be applied to approved Alaska postsecondary institutions — including participating colleges and universities and approved career and technical education programs in the state. Scholarship payments are sent directly to the institution where the student enrolls. For a current list of participating schools and programs, consult the APS program website or contact the agency that administers the scholarship.
Award amounts and duration
There are three maximum annual award levels:
- $4,755 per year
- $3,566 per year
- $2,378 per year
Recipients may remain eligible for up to eight semesters of funding within six years of their high school graduation.
Coordination with other aid
Before APS funds are applied, recipients must accept and use any other non-loan financial aid they receive (for example, federal or state grants and other scholarships). The APS will not cover more than the remaining eligible cost of attendance at the institution.
Expiration and extensions
The APS must be used within six years of high school graduation. Extensions to this six-year period are available in certain circumstances (for example, military service or enrollment delays caused by lack of available coursework beyond the student’s control). Extensions are defined by the State Board of Education & Early Development through regulation (see 4 AAC 43.045, Extensions of eligibility period).
