About David Malcolm
David Malcolm, who did not earn a traditional college degree, nevertheless completed the Harvard Business School Presidents Program and went on to a highly successful career in real estate spanning more than forty years. He holds the CCIM designation—the top credential in commercial real estate—and has founded, led, and advised numerous companies. Raised in a low-income household, Mr. Malcolm built personal wealth while committing himself to public service and community involvement. He has held offices at the local, regional, and state levels and has backed many civic and educational organizations. His philanthropic giving includes significant contributions to The San Diego Foundation and the establishment of the David Malcolm Scholarship.
Purpose of the Scholarship
The David Malcolm Scholarship supports students who have faced and overcome barriers to academic progress—whether personal, familial, demographic, or circumstantial—and who need financial assistance to continue their higher-education journey. Candidates should already have demonstrated persistence in pursuing a college degree and must explain how this scholarship would advance their educational and career goals.
Award Amount and Application Requirement
This scholarship provides $2,500 to at least one recipient. To be considered, eligible applicants must submit a 1,000-word essay and satisfy the criteria listed below.
Eligibility
To apply, candidates must meet all of the following:
- Be a high school senior who has been accepted to an accredited college or university, or be currently enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university (this includes undergraduate and graduate students).
- Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
Selection and Notification
The selection process for the David Malcolm Scholarship will proceed as follows:
1. A minimum of one recipient will be chosen and notified.
2. Notification will be sent by email. The selected student will have two (2) weeks from the notice to accept the award. If the recipient does not accept within that two-week period, they will forfeit the scholarship and an alternate recipient will be named.
3. Upon acceptance, the David Malcolm Scholarship committee may request further documentation or verification supporting the information provided in the application.
Applicants should ensure their essay and supporting materials clearly demonstrate how they meet the scholarship’s intent and eligibility requirements.
